AMERICAN CANYON, CA, Oct. 16, 2024 - The City of American Canyon is pleased to announce that Norman (Norm) Woods, MBA, was officially sworn in as the new Assistant Director of Public Works at the Oct. 15 City Council meeting. Norm joins the team with a wealth of experience in wastewater treatment operations and management. With a master’s degree in business administration from Western Governors University and a bachelor’s degree in public policy from California State University, Sacramento, Woods joins the team with both an extensive academic background and practical work experience in the field.

“We are thrilled to welcome Norm Woods to our leadership team,” said Public Works Director Erica Ahmann Smithies. “His proven track record in wastewater management, along with his business acumen and commitment to public service, make him an ideal fit to support the City’s public works initiatives.”

Prior to joining the American Canyon team, Woods served in several roles at the City of Roseville, most recently as the Acting Chief Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator-Grade IV Lead Operator. Woods holds a Grade V Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification from the State Water Resources Control Board, the highest certification available in the field. As the Acting Chief Plant Operator, Woods was responsible for planning, organizing and directing wastewater plant operations, with duties including regulatory compliance, budget management, staff supervision and more. “I’m excited to join the incredible Public Works team in American Canyon,” stated Woods. “I look forward to contributing to the City’s infrastructure goals and providing high quality services to the residents of this amazing community.”

Woods is also actively involved in professional organizations, currently serving as the President of the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Sacramento Area section. Woods also served as a member of the City of Roseville Inclusion Committee and has been involved in several community organizations including Citrus Heights Elementary P.T.A. and the Reaching Back to the Youth Program which provides youth counseling at juvenile detention centers.

Outside of work, Woods is an accomplished athlete. As a member of Team USA in triathlon and duathlon, Woods has competed all over the world, as far as Slovakia, in the past decade. He looks forward to exploring his passion for running and biking in American Canyon’s beautiful outdoor spaces. Woods is also a proud husband of 26 years and the father of five boys.

This new role as Assistant Director of Public Works marks a pivotal step for the City of American Canyon as part of continued efforts to strengthen the Public Works Department. The position was created to better support the City's growing infrastructure needs and ensure high-quality services for its residents. Woods will work closely with Director Erica Ahmann Smithies and other City leaders to drive key projects that promote sustainability and long-term community growth.

The City of American Canyon looks forward to welcoming Woods to the community and working with him to build a stronger American Canyon.
