Citizens Academy
In 2015, the City of American Canyon created the Citizens Academy to help develop future community leaders and build a better community by creating well-informed and engaged residents. Since then, nearly 200 citizens have graduated from the American Canyon Citizens Academy. The more residents understand how city government works, the more our community dialogue about issues will be meaningful and productive.
2025 Program
Program Overview: Are you curious about how your local government works and want to make a difference in your community? The City of American Canyon Citizens Academy is your chance to go behind the scenes, meet new people who keep the city running, and learn how decisions are made that impact your everyday life. Over nine weeks this fall, participants will explore a different City department each week – from public safety to parks, finance to planning – gaining a hands-on understanding of how each team plays a vital role in building a safe, vibrant, and well-managed city.
Schedule/Location: Weekly sessions every Wednesday from September 24 to November 12, 2025, 7 -9 p.m. at City Hall (4381 Broadway Street).
Special Events: In addition to weekly sessions, the program includes a facility tour of the Water Reclamation Facility on Saturday, October 18 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.. The experience concludes on Saturday, November 15, with a capstone community service project, where participants will apply what they've learned by designing and completing a project that gives back to the community.
Registration Info: Registration is open from June 9, 8:30 p.m. through September 16, 11:59 p.m.. The program is free and open to residents 18 and up. Maximum 30 participants. Apply today through our application portal.
